“The mosquitos are terrible”“Aren’t they though？” The Sound of Waves tells the story of a forbidden love in the confines of a small Japanese fishing island。 The poor Shinji and wealthy Hatsue’s love is doomed as quickly as it is felt due to the social and monetary hierarchies of the village， but such restrictions as the two being unable to meet nor write cannot deter their wish to love one another。 Amidst beautiful descriptions of nature on the island， and the work that takes place upon fishing “The mosquitos are terrible”“Aren’t they though？” The Sound of Waves tells the story of a forbidden love in the confines of a small Japanese fishing island。 The poor Shinji and wealthy Hatsue’s love is doomed as quickly as it is felt due to the social and monetary hierarchies of the village， but such restrictions as the two being unable to meet nor write cannot deter their wish to love one another。 Amidst beautiful descriptions of nature on the island， and the work that takes place upon fishing boats or the diving done by the women of the village， Mishima weaves a beautiful tale of young love and adversity that compels you so strongly to see the characters have a happy ending as unlikely as it remains throughout。 I especially loved the almost-excruciating details of every page: entire passages about shells that albeit beautiful， cut the feet of the women who dived， as well as an almost two-page segment towards the end about the women divers comparing their breasts。 I felt that in these passages， the main story got swept away a bit to give you such vivid ideas of the imagery and society that the whole story takes place in。 And when those passages would end， I’d be reminded of the story at hand and be swept up in it all again。 。。。more

Not sure if Japanese YA exists in the same way American YA does， but this would be a fascinating entry if so。 In letting it sit a few days， feels more and more like a built out Old Man and the Sea tale， not necessarily for the better。 More thoughts to come。

This reminded me of a Steinbeck novel and a small town fable/fairytale。 It had Atonement vibes and Romeo & Juliet vibes and Pachinko vibes， if you distilled Pachinko into a sliding doors style what-if story for Sunja and Hansu。It’s simple， sweet， and interesting。 I liked the portrayal of small town life and the themes of perseverance and hard work being more important than anything else。
